Ladders are still one of the most common causes of fall injuries at work. Half a day covering selection, inspection, erecting and using ladders and stepladders properly, to the Work at Height Regulations and EN 131.

Anyone using a ladder or stepladder at work, and supervisors responsible for those who do.

  • Industry hazards and the operative's responsibilities
  • The Work at Height Regulations, PUWER, ACOP, EN 131 and INDG455
  • The manufacturer's handbook for the ladder in use
  • Ladder components - rungs, stiles, feet, locking bars, spreader braces and rope and pulley systems
  • Pre-use checks, defect reporting and weather conditions
  • Choosing the right ladder for the job, the height and the duration
  • PPE for ladder work
  • Erecting, securing and relocating a ladder - the 4:1 angle and three points of contact
  • Setting up an exclusion zone and warning signs
  • Environmental considerations including wind speed and ground conditions
  • End of work inspections and correct storage

Assessment & certification

Theory and practical assessment on the final day. Successful candidates are registered with the awarding body and issued the relevant card or certificate.
