MEWP Scissor

Operating scissor-type mobile elevating work platforms — static vertical (1A) and mobile vertical (3A). One day covering set-up, stabilisers, working at height and emergency lowering.

Anyone operating a scissor lift on site or in a warehouse.

What's covered

• Industry hazards and the operator's responsibilities
• Legislation - HASAWA, PUWER, LOLER, GS6 and the Work at Height Regulations, plus CPA guidance
• The manufacturer's handbook, decals, method statements and the Beaufort wind scale
• Machine components - hydraulics, drive systems, outriggers, secondary guarding devices and safety systems
• Steering, driving and braking controls
• Pre-operational checks including the thorough examination record, tilt alarm and limit switches
• Checking every emergency lowering function
• Mounting and dismounting, and securing guard rails and the platform door
• Configuring for travel, and manoeuvring on inclines, rough terrain and in confined areas
• Safety checks at the work area - overhead obstructions, power lines, buried services and ground conditions
• Setting up the exclusion zone, SWL, and how many people the platform takes
• Harness, lanyard anchor points, suspension trauma and rescue planning
• Accessing tasks up to full operating height
• Travelling with the platform raised, where the machine allows
• Using the platform extension deck
• Loading and unloading for transport
• End of shift, parking and shutdown

Assessment & certification

Theory and practical assessment on the final day. Successful candidates are registered with the awarding body and issued the relevant card or certificate.
