Bowtec Training Services is expanding its capability into mechanical joint integrity training for the energy sector, following formal ECITB approval to deliver Mechanical Joint Integrity – Hand Torque, Flange (MJI-10). The move positions Bowtec to support the mechanical workforce on the UK’s largest energy programmes, including Hinkley Point C.
Long established in lifting, rigging and safety-critical training, Bowtec is now extending that same standards-based approach into the mechanical disciplines that underpin bolted pipework and flange assembly – the joints on which safe, leak-free plant depends. MJI-10.
Meeting the demand on major energy projects
The timing reflects where the industry is heading. Nuclear new-build programmes such as Hinkley Point C involve tens of thousands of mechanical joints, each one assembled to an assured standard, and projects of that scale require documented, recognised competence rather than work that is tightened by hand and hoped for the best. By adding MJI-10 to its portfolio, Bowtec can now train and prepare technicians to the exact benchmark those projects demand.
“Mechanical joint integrity is one of the clearest examples of competence you can see or fail to see in service,” a single incorrectly assembled flange can mean a leak, a lost-time incident or a costly shutdown. Bringing this training in-house gives contractors working across nuclear, power generation, oil and gas and petrochemical a local, ECITB-recognised route to build that competence.
What MJI-10 delivers
The course covers the safe assembly of bolted flanged and clamped joints using hand-torque techniques – the fundamentals of flanges, gaskets, bolts and clamp connectors, safe isolation, correct tightening method, and the practical operations of disassembly, assembly and work completion. Delivered with its First Principles element, it also builds the underpinning knowledge of why a joint is tightened the way it is, turning a competent technician into a confident one.
A growing mechanical offering
MJI-10 marks Bowtec’s entry into the wider ECITB Mechanical Joint Integrity scheme, with further mechanical courses to follow. The course is delivered from Bowtec’s Bridgend training centre in South Wales and on client sites UK-wide, supporting contractors on major energy and infrastructure programmes including Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.
