Operating pedestrian and rider-operated pallet and stacker trucks — the machines that move most of what goes through a warehouse. Two days covering manoeuvring, stacking and de-stacking, and loading vehicles.

- Industry hazards and the operator's responsibilities
- Legislation - HASAWA, PUWER, LOLER and ACOP L117
- The manufacturer's handbook and the capacity plate
- The different types of pallet and stacker truck
- Machine components - mast, carriage, fork arms, hydraulics and safety systems
- Steering, driving and braking controls, including the tiller arm and dead-man button
- Pre-operational checks and defect reporting
- Mounting and dismounting, and correct operator position
- Manoeuvring laden and unladen in open and confined areas
- Lateral and longitudinal stability, and the causes of tip-over
- Load centres, net and gross weight, and capacity de-rating
- Safety checks at the work area, and the SEMA racking code
- Stacking and de-stacking at ground, eye and high level
- Loading and unloading vehicles, and checking the vehicle is safe first
- Battery care and charging
- Parking, shutdown and securing the truck
Assessment & certification
Theory and practical assessment on the final day. Successful candidates are registered with the awarding body and issued the relevant card or certificate.
