What MJI-10 actually is
MJI-10 is the entry standard in the ECITB’s Mechanical Joint Integrity scheme, covering the assembly of bolted, flanged pipework joints using hand torque. It is a practical day rather than a lecture. Delegates dismantle, inspect, prepare, assemble and tighten real joints with manual tooling, and are assessed on what they produce.
The reason the standard exists is straightforward. A badly assembled flange rarely fails on the day. It leaks weeks later, under pressure, with the plant running — and by then the cost is a shutdown, a permit and a crew standing around waiting. MJI-10 sets a documented, assessed standard for getting the joint right first time.
What First Principles adds
Our MJI-10 includes the MJI01 First Principles element, which is the underpinning knowledge behind the technique: how a gasket behaves under load, what controlled bolt load is actually doing, and why the tightening sequence and pattern matter as much as the final torque figure.
It is the difference between a technician who can follow a procedure and one who understands why the procedure says what it says — and can spot when something on site is not right.
Who asks for MJI-10
Mechanical fitters, pipefitters and maintenance technicians making up and breaking bolted joints, and the employers who have to evidence their competence. On major engineering construction projects, documented joint-integrity competence is increasingly the price of entry rather than a nice-to-have: tens of thousands of joints, each one expected to be assembled to an assured standard.

MJI-10 runs from our training centre in Bridgend, South Wales, and on client sites across the UK. Most of our training is delivered at customer premises on dates that suit the job, which for mechanical trades usually means working around a shutdown rather than against it.
That includes teams working on major energy and infrastructure programmes — contractors at Hinkley Point C, near Bridgwater in Somerset, and at Sizewell C. Where MJI-10 sits in the scheme
MJI-10 is the entry point. It has no prerequisites, and it must be completed before moving on to MJI18 or MJI19. If you are planning a route for a team, MJI-10 is where everyone starts, whatever they go on to hold afterwards.
